Obviously, you don’t need an introduction for PVC pipes, it’s all around us, but a comparison between PVC and UPVC is definitely worth making, don’t you think? Even though they are made from the same base material, they have substantial differences in composition and usages. Both are used in irrigation, plumbing and construction fields, but both of it has distinct purposes and they are not interchangeable. This is not a minor technical distinction, using the wrong pipe in wrong place could lead to pressure failures, contamination risks, chemical exposures and structural weakness etc. which could possibly cause potential risks and leads to costly replacements. So, understanding the functional difference is not an option but a necessity for building a reliable and safe piping system.
Choosing between them should start from knowing what they are made of and what they are capable of doing.
What is PVC?
PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride- in its unprocessed form, it is rigid and brittle. So, the manufacturers add plasticisers, these are chemical additives that increase flexibility, workability and makes it more resistant to pressure impacts. As a result, we will get a flexible pipe, easier to handle and compatible with various fittings and adhesives.
Because of the presence of plasticisers, it is not generally recommended for the supply of potable water, especially in exposed water supply lines, because the UV rays could degrade the composite. Regular use may lead to the leaching of the additives to the water which could lead to serious health hazards. This makes PVC pipes suitable for other purposes such as; drainage, sewage, agricultural irrigation, electrical conduit systems, and general-purpose water transport where the water is not consumed directly.
What is UPVC?
UPVC stands for Unplasticised Poly Vinyl Chloride, unlike PVC here plasticisers are not added for softening the material, thereby making it rigid, less flexible and chemically stable. It does not soften in moderate temperatures, resists UV attacks and it is highly stable- doesn’t react with most common chemicals. So, it does not leach any chemicals into the water, making it fit for drinking water supply through underground and exposed channels. Apart from conduit lines it is also used in structural frameworks such as window frames and doors. This makes UPVC the most trustworthy product among the PVC pipe company in Kerala.
UPVC handles considerably higher pressure ratings. At Rithvik Pipe – UPVC pressure pipes are available in classes ranging from 2.5 kgf/cm² to 12 kgf/cm², making them suitable for everything from low-pressure domestic lines to sophisticated industrial water distribution systems.

Applications- PVC
Irrigation – PVC pipes are extensively used in the agricultural fields for irrigation purposes across Kerala. It can easily handle the moderate pressure while facilitating surface irrigation and drip irrigation methods. Farmers can easily cut cost by using PVC instead of UPVC.
Electrical Conduit Lines – Most of the electrical wiring system is passed through PVC pipes inside walls, ceilings and underground. Its insulating properties, moisture resistant capacity and durability make it suitable for long-term usage. Due to its flexibility, it could be easily bent and twisted to fit into any space with ease.
Drainage and Sewage systems – Usually these systems carry wastewater from multiple sources and most of the time they operate under low pressure. Since it is operated underground, it could not be subjected to routine check-ups and maintenance due to technical and physical difficulties, so only reliable pipes could be used. PVC is mostly used in underground drainage, storm water channels and sewage lines due to its durability, ease in installation and resistance to soil chemicals.
Applications – UPVC
Potable Water Supply – It’s important to supply drinking water without contamination risks through the public distribution systems, drinking water lines and domestic supply connections. UPVC is best suited for this. Rithvik pipes being the responsible PVC pipe manufacturers in Kerala, we conduct frequent ‘effect on water test’ which complies with WHO guidelines for ensuring the safety of drinking water lines.
High Pressure Lines – Public water distribution systems, bore well outlet lines and several industrial supply lines need pipes which can withstand high pressure. The rigid compound holds pressure without deformation, plasticised PVC cannot be relied for this in long term because chances of failure is relatively high.
Industrial and Chemical Handling Applications – Industries which deals with the transportation and storage of mild acids, alkalis, or chemical solutions use UPVC extensively. Its resistance to chemical attack and its structural rigidity make it suitable for transport lines where PVC would gradually degrade or leads to contamination.
PVC or UPVC, Which One Should You Choose?
As stated earlier, neither of them is interchangeable. It solely depends on what it carries and the term of usage.
- If it carries drinking water → UPVC, always.
- If it handles pressure above 4 kgf/cm² → UPVC.
- If it is for drainage, sewerage, or irrigation → PVC is appropriate.
- If it is for conduit or non-potable water → PVC works.
- If it is for exposed outdoor supply lines in humid conditions → UPVC for its UV and temperature resistance.
Don’t let confusion hinder you
Both PVC and UPVC is somewhat similar in appearance but not in usage and properties. Making a mistake could affect you badly. Using the right product, so the system will run for decades without any problems. Knowing which pipe goes where is not a technical luxury but a basic infrastructure literacy.
